OKLAHOMA CITY – Senator Kristen Thompson, R-Edmond, today secured passage of Senate Bill 1942, legislation aimed at preventing insurance companies from setting fees for dental services they do not cover.
If signed into law, the measure will restore greater pricing authority to dentists and limit insurers’ ability to dictate charges for procedures outside a patient’s coverage.
“This bill brings clarity and accountability to dental coverage in Oklahoma,” Senator Thompson said. “Dentists and patients should not be shaken down by an insurance company that isn’t in the room discussing procedures. This is legislation to ensure more transparency and protects patients from unexpected costs, while supporting the professional judgment by dentists.”
Under Senate Bill 1942, dental insurance plans can no longer require dentists to accept insurer-set fees for services that are not covered under a patient’s plan. If a service isn’t covered, the insurance company cannot dictate what a dentist must charge.
