Sen. Mark Mann praises Paula Lewis for her service as she departs OKCPS Board of Education

OKLAHOMA CITY – State Sen. Mark Mann issued the following statement praising the commitment and leadership of Oklahoma City Public Schools (OKCPS) Board of Education Chair Paula Lewis. Mann, D-Oklahoma City, served with Lewis for seven years before being elected to the Senate. Lewis announced her resignation this week after purchasing a home outside of the OKCPS boundaries, which meant she is no longer eligible to serve. She also pointed to her growing business and her wish to spend more time with her family.

Mann said her leadership was the longest in the board’s history, and said Lewis helped provide stability in the midst of tremendous challenges while expanding opportunities for students in one of the state’s two largest school districts.

“I saw firsthand how Paula led with integrity and steadfast commitment to Oklahoma City students. Under her leadership, the board adopted governance policies that established stronger systems, enabling the district to maintain stability and innovation over nearly a decade.

“Through the Pathway to Greatness plan, OKCPS strategically redirected resources to expand opportunities and provide greater equity for students across the district. During one of the most challenging periods in public education, the district also navigated the COVID-19 pandemic more successfully than many districts across Oklahoma.

“Perhaps most significantly, OKCPS secured voter approval of a historic nearly $1 billion bond package that is transforming school facilities and expanding career and workforce opportunities for students for generations to come.

“Paula's leadership has left an enduring mark on Oklahoma City Public Schools. While her resignation leaves a significant void, I am confident the current board will continue building on the strong foundation and momentum established during her tenure. I am grateful for Paula's years of dedicated service and wish her nothing but the best in the future.”
