OKLAHOMA CITY – Sen. Grant Green, R-Wellston, on Tuesday welcomed a Stroud High School student to the Oklahoma Senate to recognize his brave actions that saved a stranger’s life.
Stroud High School freshman Payton Hogan was at home one evening in September when he heard a loud crash outside. After seeing a wrecked vehicle, he immediately ran to help and reportedly pulled the driver from the car just moments before it became fully engulfed in flames.
During floor proceedings, the Senate recognized Hogan for his quick thinking and courage. Hogan’s family also accompanied him onto the Senate floor.
Senator Green also presented a governor’s commendation, which was read aloud before the full Senate.
The senator added that when Hogan was asked by TV news crews why he sprang into action on that fateful evening, he responded by simply saying, “It was the right thing to do.”
“Payton is an Oklahoma hero,” Green said. “What he did that night took serious courage, but he’ll tell you he was just doing what felt right. His quick thinking made all the difference, and because of him, a man’s life was saved. We should all learn from Payton and be willing to step in without hesitation when we see someone in need of help.”
Senator Green also recognized Hogan and presented him with a formal Senate citation during halftime at a Stroud football game back in the fall.
