National Foundation for Women Legislators honors Sen. Mary Boren

OKLAHOMA CITY – Sen. Mary Boren, D-Norman, has received the National Foundation for Women Legislators (NFWL) Elected Women of Excellence Award. The honor celebrates women who have demonstrated exceptional dedication to public service, often overcoming challenges and breaking barriers along the way.

NFWL Executive Director Jody Thomas told Boren, “your leadership and commitment to your community exemplify the very spirit of this honor, and we are thrilled to celebrate your accomplishments.”

In 2018, Boren became the first woman ever elected to the District 16 Senate seat, located in Cleveland County. She holds a juris doctorate from the University of Oklahoma and has championed issues ranging from common and higher education to agriculture, energy, property rights, and women’s professional sports. She’s also a founder and co-chair of the Oklahoma Irish Caucus.

“I am honored to be recognized by the National Foundation for Women Legislators. Women bring a unique perspective to the table, and we work hard to find common ground and build bipartisan coalitions for policy that improves quality of life and opportunity for everyone,” Boren said. “It’s encouraging that since 1971, the number of women serving in state legislatures has more than quintupled, and I’m proud to be among the 14 women currently serving in the Oklahoma Senate.”

NFWL is a nonpartisan organization which provides strategic resources to elected women for leadership development and effective governance, and includes members serving in state, county and municipal elected office.
