Senator Constance N. “Connie” Johnson (D-Oklahoma County), a 32-year veteran policy maker with a focus on children and families, advocates respect for and inclusion of diverse perspectives in hammering out solutions to difficult policy areas. A product of public education and educator parents, Ms. Johnson holds a degree in French and a Masters in Rehabilitation Counseling. She has represented Oklahoma County’s predominantly African American community for 8 years after serving for 24 years as senior legislative analyst for the Senate health and human services. An activist at heart, her service areas include PTA, environmental justice and awareness, diabetes and heart health awareness.   She focuses on issues that disproportionately affect the economic and social well-being of the state’s poor, minorities, women and children, from a health and mental health, and human services focus. She has enacted legislation and sponsored forums and programs that promote health education and awareness about prevention and management of diabetes, stroke, cancer, and tobacco in the community. An outspoken advocate for eliminating health disparities and domestic violence, her efforts to protect women’s reproductive health rights in Oklahoma were featured in a segment of Jon Stewart’s Daily Show entitled “Bro. Choice,” which led to the defeat of the “Personhood” Bill (SB1433) in 2012.  Sen. Johnson believes in citizen involvement in government, and frequently speaks to and trains groups in the legislative process. She concurrently focuses on programs and activities that promote respect, valuing, and appreciation of diversity.

A member of the full Senate Appropriations Committee and the Appropriations Subcommittee on Health and Human Services, Sen. Johnson serves on the Health and Human Services, Energy, Finance, and Rules standing committees. She Chairs the Senate Democrats Outreach Committee and is immediate past chair of the Oklahoma Legislative Black Caucus. An immediate past officer of NBCSL, she presently chairs the NBCSL Health Committee. Sen. Johnson is the 2012 Recipient of the Oklahoma Democratic Party’s State Representative Opio Toure Statesman of the Year Award. She also chairs the State Democratic Party Affirmative Action Committee.

A mother, grandmother and native Oklahoman, Sen. Johnson hails from rural southeastern Oklahoma (Holdenville, Dustin and Idabel), attended Oklahoma City Public Schools, graduating from Frederick A. Douglass High School, and is Ivy League educated. She earned a full scholarship to the University of Pennsylvania.
