Sen. Pittman comments on Dallas law enforcement shooting; weekend OKC Rally

State Sen. Anastasia Pittman, D-Oklahoma City, issued the following statement in response to the deaths of Dallas law enforcement officers last week, and other tragic shootings of African American citizens and police officers around the country in recent weeks, as well as last weekend’s Black Lives Matter rally in Oklahoma City

“I urge my community – our friends, family and neighbors – to seek peaceful solutions to conflict. We must stop the violence and look for positive ways to live amicably in society. The pain today is raw, but it’s my hope we can channel that anger and frustration into purposefully positive outcomes before any more innocent lives are lost. Our children deserve a better future than to inherit a legacy of hate and violence. Respect, tolerance and diversity are the foundation of a better community for everyone.

"Let's focus on hope and not hate. Let the process of the legislature require additional training for officers who come in direct contact with diverse communities. Let our presence to oppose violence be successful. We cannot be afraid to have courageous conversations with those who have the power to demand justice, equality and equity for all citizens.

“So my challenge to the next generation is that we must decide today what our legacy of leadership will look like for the betterment of our future. Let us continue to pray for the families of the victims of the violence.

“I also want to thank the Black Lives Matter movement, Attorney David Slane, our pastors, the elected officials, the NAACP, other civic groups and yes, even our law enforcement that protect our communities of color. We must now take positive action and forever value our votes, and vote our values.”
