State Sen. Anastasia A. Pittman has been named Assistant Floor Leader for the Senate Democratic Caucus. Senator John Sparks, Democratic Leader named Pittman to the position, where she will help identify issues and legislation of importance to the Democratic Caucus, keep members apprised of upcoming votes, develop strategies for passing legislation that best serves citizens and shine the light on proposed measures that fall short.

Sparks thanked Pittman for her willingness to take on the additional responsibilities in the Senate.

“Senator Pittman has been a tireless advocate on behalf of her constituents and on important issues like providing adequate funding for our schools. She knows the importance of economic opportunity for all Oklahomans and the critical need for greater access to quality health care, including mental health care,” said Sparks, D-Norman. “I know she will do an excellent job helping our caucus work together in the most effective way possible to champion these issues.”

Pittman is also the former chairwoman of the Legislative Black Caucus, and has shined the spotlight on issues that disproportionately impact people of color in a variety of areas, from disciplinary actions in public schools to the use of deadly force. Pittman noted these reflect the kinds of issues the Democratic Caucus should work together to address.

“It’s an honor and privilege to serve in this capacity,” said Pittman, D-Oklahoma City. “While the Senate Democrats don’t currently hold a majority in the chamber, our caucus still serves a vital role in state government and after 17 years of work in the legislature, my passion for service to our state and the people who live here still runs deep. I take pride in being able to move the needle towards creating a better life for all Oklahomans, regardless of race, gender, religion or economic status.”
