Senate approves measure to allow veterans designation on Oklahoma
driver’s licenses
The state Senate today approved legislation that
would allow veterans to have a special emblem on their Oklahoma
driver’s licenses.

Ballenger and Rep. Jerry Shoemake, Senate Bill 138 would authorize
the Department of Public Safety to create driver’s licenses
with the word ‘Veteran’ appearing on a flag in one
corner.
“This bill is a way to honor our veterans young and old,
but it will be especially helpful for our elderly veterans,”
said Ballenger, D-Okmulgee. “Older veterans in many instances
need to be able to verify their status as a veteran, to participate
in a Veteran’s Day event or enter a park or to qualify for
a special discount. A flag on their driver’s license is
an easy way for veterans to identify themselves.”
Ballenger noted SB 138 was carried over from the first session
of the 53rd Legislature in order to give the Department of Public
Safety sufficient time to prepare the new ID cards. Under the
bill, veterans will be able to put the symbol on their driver’s
license when it is renewed.
“Since we introduced the bill, we’ve been contacted
by numerous veterans who were very appreciative of the idea,”
Ballenger said. “This is a gesture of gratitude, but also
a practical way to help our veterans. I’m very proud to
see this approved by the Legislature.”
SB 138 now advances to the Governor’s desk.
