Former State Rep. Al McAffrey is officially the newest member of the Oklahoma State Senate. McAffrey, D-Oklahoma City, won the District 46 seat in a special election held February 14. The State Election Board certified the results on Tuesday, February 21, clearing the way for McAffrey to take the Oath of Office.

“When I looked at all the committee votes that were scheduled, I wanted the citizens of my district to have a voice as soon as possible. Supreme Court Justice
Yvonne Kauger graciously came to my office to administer the oath of office Wednesday morning,” McAffrey said. “However, I knew I had family members and supporters who wanted to see the Oath of Office Ceremony, so we proceeded with the public swearing-in we’d already planned for Thursday.”

A native Oklahoman who grew up in Sulphur, McAffrey is a veteran of the U.S. Navy, a former Oklahoma City police officer, and currently owns and operates OK Cremation and Mortuary Services. The father of three daughters, McAffrey also has eight grandchildren.

“I know what it is like to live, work and raise a family here in Oklahoma. I know how important it is for our children to get the best education possible, and for them to be able to find good jobs once they graduate. I want them to feel safe, whether they’re at home or in their community,” McAffrey said. “I also know the challenges of running a business here. I think these are universal issues for most Oklahomans, and I look forward to working with my fellow Senators to make our state the best it can be.”
