Oklahomans Look Forward to Third Annual
Tax-Free Weekend
OKLAHOMA CITY – The state’s third annual sales tax
holiday will begin August 7, giving families an opportunity to
save money on children’s back-to-school clothing while encouraging
people to support Oklahoma businesses. State Sen. Don
Barrington,
R-Lawton, was the principal author of the measure creating Oklahoma’s
sales tax holiday and encourages residents to take advantage of
the event.
“For years, we lost Oklahoma dollars to other states, particularly Texas,
that offered a sales tax holiday,” Barrington said. “What we
found was that not only did having our own event keep shoppers here, but they
also made other purchases that were not included in the tax-free items. It
was a win-win for Oklahomans, for the state and for our local businesses.”
This year’s sales tax holiday begins at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, August 7
and ends at midnight on Sunday, August 9. Clothing and shoes priced under
$100 are exempt from all sales taxes during that time period.
“I really want to encourage our citizens to go out and support our local
businesses in communities across Oklahoma—not just the weekend of August
7, but throughout the year,” Barrington said. “By pulling together
and supporting our own, we will help Oklahoma’s economy and ensure a better
future for all our citizens.”
