Sen. Randy Brogdon
Senator Brogdon Thanks Governor for Signing Ten Commandments Monument
Bill
Sen. Randy
Brogdon said he was extremely pleased that Gov. Brad Henry
had signed legislation authorizing a Ten Commandments monument
to be placed on the grounds of the State Capitol. Brogdon was
principal Senate author of the legislation.
“I want to thank Governor Henry for signing this legislation,”
Brogdon said. “It passed with bipartisan support, and I
believe it is something the people of Oklahoma would like to see
at their State Capitol.”
Critics of the legislation claimed the proposed monument would
be a violation of the separation of church and state. Brogdon
disagreed with that argument.
“There is a historical context for the Ten Commandments,
in that its laws influenced America’s founding fathers,
and the laws of Oklahoma,” Brogdon said. “Historically,
the commandments have had a profound impact on the laws of our
government.”
When the legislation was debated in the Senate, Brogdon noted
a law firm has already volunteered to represent the state pro
bono if the placement of the Ten Commandments monument is challenged
in court.
