Coffee Reforms Process to Protect Rape Victims

Sen. Glenn Coffee Sen. Glenn Coffee

President Pro Tem Glenn Coffee applauded the signing of Senate Bill 894 into law that will bring needed medical protection to rape victims.

The provisions in Senate Bill 894, authored by Pro Tem Coffee, allow a rape victim to have access to medical care immediately without having to file legal charges against her attacker. Currently, a nurse or other medical professional is required to contact local law enforcement at the time a victim seeks medical attention. Rape victims are often too traumatized to seek medical assistance when they know their case will be immediately reported to law enforcement.

Senate Bill 894 passed the Senate with a 46-0 vote, and the House with 97-0 vote. Through Senate Bill 894, Oklahoma is also brought into compliance with the federal Violence Against Women Act.

“An unfortunate reality is that victims of sexual attacks often delay seeking critical medical treatment due to the fear of dealing with legal consequences,” said Pro Tem Coffee. “The unanimous support of this legislation shows that we are a legislature that makes it a priority to ensure the public safety of Oklahomans.”

“With the signing of Senate Bill 894, rape victims can now have immediate access to treatment, along with peace of mind knowing they can pursue legal recourse at a less stressful time,” Coffee added.
