Bipartisan Sales Tax Holiday Measure Approved by Full Senate

 

A measure that would enact a “back-to-school” sales tax holiday in Oklahoma was approved on Tuesday by the full Senate.

The two authors of the bipartisan proposal said the bill will help keep consumer dollars in the state. Under Senate Bill 861, the Oklahoma sales tax holiday would be held on the same days as the Texas holiday.

The bill was authored by Democratic Sen. Jay Paul Gumm and Republican Sen. Don Barrington.

Under the provisions of the bill, shoes and clothing priced at less than $100 would be tax free during the first Friday, Saturday and Sunday in August.

“I’m pleased we were able to join together and approve a positive measure that benefits Oklahoma families and provides an economic boost to the state,” said Barrington, R-Lawton. “With an evenly divided Senate, it’s more important than ever that we work together as a body to pass legislation that benefits all Oklahomans.”

Gumm explained that Texas’ sales tax holiday has become a preferred shopping time for many Oklahomans.
 

“My district borders Texas and I know how many people are saving up to make that trip and spend their money outside the state,” said Gumm, D-Durant. “This measure saves Oklahomans the travel, and keeps millions of dollars in the state. This is a good bill for families and retailers – today’s vote is good news for the state.”
 

Barrington noted that the measure would reimburse cities and counties that lose any revenue due to the sales tax holiday.
 

The measure will now advance to a House committee for consideration.
