Senate Calls for Statewide Vote to Create Oklahoma Safe Roads Trust Fund

Senator Kenneth Corn Senator Kenneth Corn

State Senators voted Monday for a measure calling for a Constitutional amendment to create the Oklahoma Safe Roads Trust Fund and require that all motor fuels taxes are deposited in the fund.
Senate Joint Resolution 58 by Senator Kenneth Corn passed the Senate by a vote of 44-0.

“Every cent of the taxes Oklahomans pay at the fuel pump should be reinvested in our state’s transportation infrastructure. Oklahoma has some of the worst roads and bridges in the nation and we cannot afford to spend our fuel tax dollars on non-transportation projects,” Corn said.

SJR 58 would require a statewide vote to amend the Constitution. The measure now goes to the Oklahoma House of Representatives for consideration.

Also Monday, Senators approved a companion measure, Senate Bill 1902, which apportions money from this fund. SB 1902 passed the Senate 44-0.
