Sen. Bernest Cain
International Student Awareness Day set at Capitol
Hundreds
of international high school and college students are
expected to descend on the State Capitol March 28 for
International Student Awareness Day.
State Senator Bernest Cain (D-Oklahoma City), who serves
as the co-chair of the Special Joint Committee on International
Development, said the event has been occurring for over
a decade. He said in 2004 over 500 international high
school and college students attended the event.
“International Student Awareness Day is a great
opportunity to bring students, university, business
and state officials together,” Cain said. “It
gives those who attend the chance to learn about other
cultures as well as share information about their own.”
The deadline to register is March 24 and the event is
open to all international students currently enrolled
in Oklahoma’s high schools, colleges and universities.
The event is sponsored by the Special Joint Committee
on International Development, the Governor’s International
Team and the Oklahoma Department of Commerce.
Registration for the event begins at 8:30 a.m. in the
south hallway of the fourth floor rotunda of the Capitol.
There will be a meeting in the House Chamber at 10 a.m.
and the event closes at 1:30 p.m. Food will be available
on the second floor rotunda.
The event will feature free booths, entertainment and
international cuisine. Participants will have the opportunity
to meet with other international students, and network
with state officials, university and business representatives.
The Governor’s International Team will also have
a passport booth available.
Rep. Shane Jett, (R-Tecumseh) is the event’s other
co-chair.
“This will be an enriching experience that the
international students will be able to take back with
them to their respective home countries as a highlight
of their time in Oklahoma and the United States,”
Jett said.
