State Senator Robert M. Kerr said he felt optimistic after beginning chemotherapy last week. In a statement read to fellow members, the Altus Democrat disclosed that after beating cancer into remission 11 years ago, he has again been diagnosed with the disease.

“My doctors told me another round of chemotherapy can put this back into remission. I had my first treatment last Friday morning and will continue to receive chemotherapy at three week intervals,” Kerr said.

“You may notice some changes—yes, even less hair but I’m going to think positive. When it comes back it will be thick and dark brown.”

In his statement, he recounted how the last time he ran for re-election a long time friend asked why, at his age, would he want to run again. Kerr said he responded by saying that “when my yesterdays become more important than my tomorrows, I will resign immediately. I stand by the sentiment now.”

Kerr said it was his intent and desire to finish out his term and said as long as he could do the job for the people of District 38, he would. He added that he held each and every member of the Senate in his heart with admiration and respect. “I look forward to becoming better acquainted with each new member.”

“My prayers are with each of you, this continuing body, the Great State of Oklahoma, and the United States of America. I pray God’s richest blessings and continual blessings on each.”
