Senator Monson Featured in July Ebony Magazine
State
Senator Angela Monson said
she was honored to be chosen for a profile in a national publication.
The Oklahoma lawmaker is featured in the July issue of Ebony
magazine.
“It really is an honor. I’ve taken on issues and projects
I care deeply about on behalf of the people I represent. To have that
work acknowledged in a national magazine like Ebony is really the icing
on the cake,” said Senator Monson.
Senator Monson is the first black woman ever to be elected president
of the National Conference of State Legislatures
and the first woman ever to serve in a top leadership position in the
Oklahoma State Senate.
While in the state legislature, the Oklahoma City Democrat has authored
groundbreaking legislation including a health insurance parity bill
aimed at including coverage for treatable mental illnesses.
Although the demands of her leadership roles in the state legislature
and NCSL have been great, Senator Monson is fully devoted to her role
as mother to her late sister’s children, Donovan and Danielle
Gaddis.
She is also very active in the Voice of Praise Baptist Church in Oklahoma
City and volunteers as an adult leader for youth activities.
“I was taught that whatever talents and abilities God gives you,
you should use those to give back and help those around you. I feel
fortunate to have been able to do that in my community, in my state
and at the national level. I’ve been very blessed,” said
Monson.
