Rural Fire

About $4 million was appropriated in FY'00 for fire protection and training programs through the Agriculture Department. Over the past five years, federal matching funds for rural fire protection have diminished. The state continues to replace these funds to protect private and public property from fire damage, to train volunteer firefighters, and to provide equipment to the state's 871 fire departments. (HB 1534)

The Legislature's investment in the Rural Firefighter program has yielded more than $25 million annually in insurance premium savings due to reduced risk ratings on property.
