Shumate was elected in November 2012 to serve the people of Oklahoma's
Senate District 11. Prior to his election to the state senate,
Shumate served four terms in the Oklahoma House of Representatives.
Prior to his career he served as press secretary to OU President David
Senator Shumate has
a passion for improving education. He has been an advocate for kids
trapped in low performing schools and fought for increased funding
for public education.
Jabar is very active
in his community serving as a trustee and usher at his church,
Metropolitan Baptist Church; as a member of the board of trustees for
the National Urban League; and with his fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi
He also serves on the
Oklahoma Foundation for Excellence Board of Directors and represents
Oklahoma on the legislative advisory committee for the Southern
Regional Education Board. Senator Shumate is a member of the 19th
class of Leadership Oklahoma and while in the House was selected for
the prestigious Henry Toll Fellowship Program.
