Randy Bass was elected to the Oklahoma State Senate in November
2004 and represents Senate District 32, which includes Lawton and
Comanche County. He is currently the Democratic Floor Leader and
also serves on several Senate committees, including Appropriations,
Energy, Pensions, Insurance, Tourism & Wildlife, and Transportation.
Additionally, Bass sits on the Appropriations Subcommittee for General
Government and Transportation, as well as Natural Resources and
Prior to his service in the State Senate, Bass most recently served
his hometown as City Councilman for Ward 1 from March 2001 until
his election to office in 2004.
Born March 13, 1954 in Lawton, Oklahoma, Bass graduated from Lawton
High School and enjoyed a career in baseball after he was drafted
as a fourth round pick in 1972 by the Minnesota Twins. He spent
time with several major league teams, including the Kansas City
Royals, the Montreal Expos, the San Diego Padres and Texas Rangers
before being selected to play in Japan in 1982 where he became the
first baseman and power hitter for the Hanshin Tigers. Bass currently
holds eight national records in Japan and is the only player to
win back-to-back Triple Crowns. He hit 200 home runs faster than
any man in baseball history and set the all-time season batting
average mark of .389 in 1986.
Following his time on the baseball field, Bass was appointed ambassador
to Japan by Governor George Nigh in 1986. His passion for the sport
is kept alive today by serving as a member of the Major League Baseball
Association and through trips to Japan where he plays celebrity
games and golf tournaments. He has also served as commentator for
baseball games for Minichi Broadcasting Systems in Japan and worked
as a scout for the Tokyo Giants from 1998 to 2003.
Bass is a member of the Oklahoma Municipal League and is an avid
golfer. He is an active member of his community where he is an Elder
of Holy Cross Lutheran Church and an associate member of Lawton
Ambucs. He enjoys spending time with his wife Kelley, his son Zach,
daughters Staci and Remi and his four grandchildren Levi, Hagen,
Jayden and Randi.
